Costa Rica fishing - seasons & species

Costa Rica is known as the Republic of Costa Rica, a country in Central America. Los Suenos Marina is Costa Rica’s fishing capital and there are more fish available throughout the year there than any other part of Costa Rica. A valid Costa Rican fishing license is required for all fishing, fresh and salt water. Fishing areas are the North & South Pacific, Central Pacific, North Caribbean Coast, and Lake Arenal.

Types of Fishing:

Jigging is used in both deep and shallow water using metal jigs and soft plastics. Jack Crevalle, Amberjack, Cubera Snapper, Groupers, Roosterfish, Yellowfin Tuna, and Wahoo are fished this way. This is a mixed bag approach and no one knows which type of fish will be caught.

Fly Fishing:

Billfish and other saltwater species are attracted to fly fishing techniques. Billfish are caught often using this method. Saltwater species that are caught on the fly are Tuna, Dorado, Sailfish, Roosterfish, and Marlin.

The fishing seasons are divided into two categories:

Dry Season -  from December to April

Green Season - from May to November

Offshore - This is a full-day fishing targeting Billfish, Sailfish, Yellow fin Tuna, and Wahoo and the season is from December to May. Yellowfin Tuna are caught from January to April and Mahi Mahi are caught from January to August, which is the peak season.

Inshore or Near shore - Roosterfish are caught throughout the year and the peak season is from February to April to July or August. Grouper, Snapper, Amberjack, and Corvina are caught all year round.
